Insect breeding and Agri-Ecology in Rwanda

Abstract

This seminar will be about the impact of breeding insects in Rwanda.  It will be presented by Eng.  Dominique Xavio Imbabazi, the Managing Director of Golden Insect ltd, located in Musanze district.  Golden Insect ltd is a professional center in Rwanda that commercially breeds insects for Food, Feed and other uses.  During this seminar, we will look at species bred in that center, where they are collected, breeding techniques and their use. Furthermore, we will look at the opportunities and challenges of breeding insects in Rwanda.  There will be a time for discussion and share information on insect breeding issues.

Biography

Eng. Dominique Xavio Imbabazi, is a social entrepreneur, 29 years of age, professionally breeding insects as a permanent Job from the last 5 years. He is Managing Director and owner of Golden Insect ltd, located in Musanze –Rwanda.  He has a bachelor’s degree in Horticulture from University of Rwanda –College of Agriculture, Animal sciences and Veterinary Medicine.  He did Biology in secondary school at Ecole des Sciences de Musanze where he obtained an advanced certificate of education. He is the first person in Rwanda to have started selling of red worms and vermicompost and studied their effect on growth and yield of potato.  Under the invitation of MINAGRI, he has been presenting his project in Rwanda Agri-show at Mulindi expo-ground for three successive years.  Up to now he breeds 4 species of insect namely Edible crickets, Edible snails, Black soldier flies and red worms.  He has supplied insects and delivered trainings to different research institutions and organizations such as Water for People Rwanda, SNV-Rwanda, UR-CAVM and National Industrial and Research Development Agency. Furthermore, he works with individual farmers in promoting SMART AGRICULTURE and sustainable animal farming. Currently, he is working as National consultant at Water for People- Rwanda in Tiger Worm Toilet.
