Biodiversity Beers and Bags of Crisps (5Bs) Project

The Biodiversity, Beers, Bitters, Beverages, and a Bag of Crisps (5Bs Products) project is a multi-institutional partnership that harnesses Rwanda’s rich native plant biodiversity to develop innovative, market-ready food and beverage products. Working collaboratively with academia, industry, government, and community partners, the Center of Excellence in Biodiversity and Natural Resource Management (CoEB) contributes scientific expertise in plant identification, traditional knowledge, and biodiversity conservation. The project valorizes indigenous species, many with aromatic, medicinal, or fermentation potential to create new dairy flavors, beer and beverage profiles, natural bitters, unique yeasts, and seasonings for crisps and other foods. By promoting “Made in Rwanda” products, strengthening the national bioeconomy, and protecting native biodiversity, the 5Bs initiative showcases how science, culture, and innovation can come together to generate job, enhance value chains, and celebrate Rwanda’s natural heritage. The project is funded by the National Council for Science and Technology (NCST).
