Funded by the Swedish Government the aim of this project is to reduce vulnerability to climatechange through community-based biodiversity conservation. Rwanda Forestry Authority, the International Union for theConservation of Nature (IUCN), Albertine Rift Conservation Society (ARCOS) and the Center of Excellence in Biodiversity and Natural Resource Management (CoEB) at the University of Rwanda under the leadership of the Ministry of Environment are implementing the project. The main activities include restoring and sustaining biodiversity in protected natural remanent forests of Eastern Rwandaand establishednew biodiversity sanctuaries. The projectalso supports farmers to developviable nature-based value chains, enterprises and establish community-based payment forecosystem services to reward farmers for promoting biodiversity and native species on theirlands. Under this joint effort, the CoEB conducted biodiversity baseline survey, developed the tree scoring tool which facilitates theevaluation of the success in tree planting and maintenance and supportedthreeMSc students enrolledat the University of Rwanda to conduct their MSc research in COMBIO intervention sites..
