WELCOME MESSAGE BY DIRECTOR

Director

Thank you for your interest in the Center of Excellence in Biodiversity and Natural Resource Management (CoEB). The Center of Excellence in Biodiversity and Natural Resource Management (CoEB) was launched in 2017 as a research center at the University of Rwanda. The Center acts as a clearing house for data and information on biodiversity and natural resources and promotes the understanding, monitoring and cataloging of biodiversity, ecosystem functioning and services, climate change impacts and adaptation, and science-policy linkages in Rwanda and the region.

The CoEB focuses on advancing science for biodiversity conservation and sustainable development in an interdisciplinary framework. Further, it acts as a hub for capacity building and knowledge generation on biodiversity conservation and natural resource management in the country in support of protected areas management, nature-based tourism, ecosystem restoration and nature-based solutions, gene-banking, water cycle management, climate smart agriculture, agrobiodiversity, ecosystem services including pollination, soil fertility, climate adaptation and resilience strategies, green growth strategies and carbon offsets and climate finance.

The CoEB has recently been scaled up to the UNESCO Category II of Centers of Excellence. As a Category 2 Center (C2C) under the auspices of UNESCO, the CoEB supports Rwanda and the region to address impacts of climate change and natural hazards, management of natural resources, loss of biodiversity, ecosystem services, and environmentally sustainable economic development.
